Richard John Gillings - Mathematician
Biography
Dick Gillings graduated with a B.Sc.(hons) from Sydney University in 1924.
He taught mathematics and was Maths Master at Glen Innes, Newcastle, Canterbury, Taree and North Sydney Boys High Schools.
In 1953 he received his M.Ed., also from Sydney University.
In 1953 he was granted a Carnegie Fellowship to study in the USA where he did a post graduate course at Brown University studying Babylonian and Egyptian Mathematics.
From 1947 to 1962, Dick lectured at Balmain Teachers College and the Sydney University Teachers College.
From 1963 to 1969 he was a lecturer in the History and Philosophy of Science department at the University of N.S.W.
Dick represented Australia at both the 1958 and the 1962 Empire Games playing Lawn Bowls.
He died in 1987 at the age of 84.
